CBJ names Olde Mecklenburg Brewery's John Marrino 2018 Business Person of the Year

by Jennifer Thomas

Marrino is a pioneer in Charlotte’s growing craft-beer scene; OMB was the first brewery to open in the Queen City in March 2009.

Since then, OMB has built a following for its German-style brews, with the likes of Copper, Captain Jack and seasonal award-winning Mecktoberfest.

OMB also delivers a traditional beer-hall feel with its biergarten and brauhaus in lower South End.

Marrino has invested more than $20 million into OMB and its facilities. Its workforce has grown from three employees — including himself— to 150, currently.

Earlier this year, OMB opened Captain Jack’s Tavern at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Another $10 million project is looming. Plans for a 17-barrel brewery, full restaurant and biergarten are moving forward at a 24-acre site in Cornelius.
